Nylon

The nylon Extremis uses for the DoNuts cover is very strong ballistic nylon, also used in the luggage industry.
Ballistic nylon has a superior tensile strength. Especially
for DoNuts, tensile strength is very important. Because of the inflated tube inside of the cover, it is put under a
lot of pressure. By using ballistic nylon, the cover can resist the tube’s pressure.
The nylon can be cleaned with ordinary soap water. It still is a textile and you should always be careful with sharp objects or floors.

Nylon was developed as a synthetic substitute for silk. Silk is harvested from cocoons made by silkworms. Because this natural material is scares and therefore expensive, men invented nylon. Silk consists of a typical molecular structure, that is basically one very long repeating unit of a specific molecule structure. |

Chemists imitated this structure with different atoms, so it could be made out of oil. |

The red part of the repeating unit is the same as in natural silk and is very important for the strength of the material, it is called an amide group. Thats why we call nylon a polyamide material.
The O (oxygen atom) side of the amide group is like a side of a magnet and the H (hydrogen atom) side is like the +side of a magnet. So when nylon is spun up into fibres, the strings of polyamide molecules line up parallel to each other due to the + and - attraction. The amide groups on adjacent strings form strong bonds with each other, called hydrogen bonds. These hydrogen bonds make nylon so strong. |

Maintenance
Clean with water and
if necessary a little bit of
detergent. Always let the fabric
dry completely. |
