On the road - Ip boane

A road trip with a VW Beetle and all that happens along the way/ Autumn 2006

The dialect we speak in our part of Belgium is a very rich language with numerous ways to express ourselves. As we wish to encourage foreign visitors to West Flanders to interact and mingle with the locals using their own typical words and expressions, we created this language section in Noozn magazine.

Here it goes..

  beatle West-Vlaanderen

English   West-Flemish

How nice of your grandma that we can take this vintage car for a spin!’

But something is making a funny noise.’

‘I’ll check the oil level for all certainty.’

‘De max vajje memmee damme ne kjie met die toffe oede karre meuhen rjien!’

Mo truttelt lik etwadde.’

Kgo t’oliepiel tsjekk’n voa tzekerste.’

  beatle blue

After adding some oil and a quick check all seems OK and off they go.‘

My God, this old thing consumes gasoline like a big truck, we need to find a gas station fast.’

Luckily they find a gas station quickly and can proceed the trip, but only having an old road map at their disposal they soon find out they’re lost!

Mohowzeh, dat oed kallut zuupt nafte lik e kammiong, we moen zjiere e naftepompe vind’n.’   blue beatle

‘Silly me, I forgot to bring my mobile GPS.’

We’ll stop at this house and you just ask a local. Don’t worry, they don’t bite.’

‘Kè mè mien’n domme kop mien’n droagboar’n Hee Pee Esse verheet’n mee te bring’n.’

‘We gon ier stopp’n an dad us en an een’n van ollier vraah’n. Ze biet’n ier nie wije, je moetter nie mee inzitt’n.’

  bleu beatle

‘Hello Sir, could you direct us to Gijverinkhove?’

‘Gijverinkhove? By Jove that’s in the middle of nowhere! But it’s not difficult to find: just continue driving straight ahead for half an hour and you’re there.’

Ne hoen dah menjiere, kujje hie oes e kjie de weug wiez’n no Heverinkove?’

‘Heverinkove? Movintoh, das int ol van Pluto dadde. Moa ’t is nie moeilik, zjuste een olf eure rechte deure ejje zit er.’

  blue beatle

Soon they’re off again in the right direction. All of a sudden traffic gets stopped because one of the bridges over the Canal in Lo-Reninge is open.

‘Now this! We’ll have to wait for the barrier.’

to be continued...

T’is nu dadde! We hon moetn wachten voa de barriele.’   blue beatle
