On the road, the sequel- Ip boane, 't vervollh

A road trip with a VW Beetle and all that happens along the way/ January 2007

The dialect we speak in our part of Belgium is a very rich language with numerous ways to express ourselves. As we wish to encourage foreign visitors to West Flanders to interact and mingle with the locals using their own typical words and expressions, we created this language section in Noozn magazine.

Here it goes..

  Beatle, West-Vlaanderen dialect, Lo

English   West-Flemish

‘I hope all that hassle we’ve been through is over now and we can continue our trip to Gijverinkhove.’

‘K’ope dat ol da hetsjool nu eindelik van de boan’ is en damme oeznen trip no Heverinkove kunn’n voartzett’n

  west-vlaams dialect

Now what, the van in front seems to have come to a stand still. Let’s listen if we can help’

Hello there! Has your van just broken down?’

‘Wademmenu, die kamjonette vor oes stoa helek stille. Lat oes ne kjie orten of damme kunn’n elp’n’

‘Ne hoen dah! Stoa j’ier zjuste mejje kamjonitte in panne deh?’

  west-vlaams dialect

‘Yes I have, and I have an urgent shipment of DollyPop sheepskin whine covers with me for Extremis from Gijverinkhove.’

Let me have a look. Ooh, you’re in trouble my man. Your radiator is leaking.’

‘Joajek, en kee ier een driengend voer van die schoapevellekes meei vor over e wienflasje te trekk’n vor Extremis va Heverinkove’‘

‘Loat mie ne kjie piep’n. Owla, j’et ajje rekker joengne. J’en radiateur lekt.’

  car broken down, west-vlaams dialect

As our friends were on their way to Gijverinkhove anyway they agree to unload the shipment of Dollypop covers from the van and to deliver them in the Beetle. Off they go again !

‘What else will we come across? But we sure made that man extremely happy, that’s for sure.’

‘Gijverinkhove is already in sight, now we just have to drop off our shipment.’

‘Wa homme noh ollemolle meejmoak’n?. Moa w’en dien’n vent endeliks bliedde hemoakt, da’s zeker dadde.’

Heverinkove is ol in ziht, nu noh zjuste us voer binn’nsmiet’n’.

  Extremis, beatle

Our friends promised the van driver to send the signed delivery note by post. After all their adventures they start getting hungry and head for some lovely Belgian fries !
